Beat
The New Dominion Choraliers
and The American Balalaika Symphony
February 27, 2010
“Movin’ Out” with the American Balalaika Symphony, Feb. 27, 2010
The
American Balalaika Symphony (ABS) once again breaks musical boundaries, this
time performing in concert with the New Dominion Choraliers at the Hylton Memorial
Chapel & Event Center in Woodbridge, VA, on February 27, 2010. Also performing will be the Brass Lite
Quintet.
Known
for its fresh arrangements and exciting approach to classical music,
particularly in light of the orchestra’s venerable Russian instruments, the
American Balalaika Symphony once again shows its spirit of innovation, with an
evening of rock, pop, doo-wop, jazz, and swing tunes from the ’40s, ‘50s, and
’60s, directed by ABS founder, artistic director and conductor, Peter
Trofimenko.
The
first half of the performance, Movin’
With the Beat, will feature the Choraliers performing rock and roll
classics such as Oh, What a Night, Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You, Stop in the
Name of Love, and Save the Last Dance
for Me.
Following
this, ABS baritone Vladimir Rozenblat, with orchestra and chorus, will deliver unique
renditions of Sinatra standards—The
Shadow of Your Smile and New York, New
York—Tony Bennett favorite, I Left My
Heart in San Francisco, and the classic Those
Were the Days, among others.
In the second half, the
American Balalaika Symphony and the New Dominion Choraliers will join forces to
honor jazz trumpet great Louis Armstrong with Satchmo, a medley of his greatest hits; Irving Berlin with Putting on the Ritz; and Cole Porter with
a medley called Anything Goes.
Also
included in the second half is Memory from
the Broadway musical, Cats, and rock
favorites that include We Will Rock You,
That Old Time Rock and Roll, and Bitten by the Beat.
ABS
soprano saxophonist, Victor Dubenco, will complete the program with a dazzling
performance of Brazilian composer Valdir Azevedo’s, Armorado.
The
American Balalaika Symphony is the recent winner of the Strathmore’s 25th
Anniversary Competition in which 34 artists from Maryland, Virginia, West
Virginia, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia competed to win a fully
sponsored performance at the Strathmore.
The ABS performed in the Music Center on January 16, 2010.
In
2007, ABS was awarded the Grand Prize in the 2007 International Music Golden
Trophy Competition, held in New York. A panel of six distinguished judges from
the United States, Japan, Russia, Uzbekistan, and Ukraine selected the ABS from
among 87 participants from around the world.
Also
in 2007, ABS was honored at the 5th annual international competition, “Musical
Vladivostok 2007,” held in Vladivostok, Russia under the auspices of Russia’s
Federal Culture and Cinematography Agency.
In
May 2008, ABS conductor and artistic director, Peter Trofimenko was appointed
to the prestigious Russian Academy of Folk Music – the only living conductor of
a folk orchestra to be honored in this way.
